Quiz Team

The South Georgia College Quiz Team is a competitive academic club. We travel to approximately four tournaments each semester to play teams from other colleges. The Quiz Team offers the rare opportunity to compete against other schools in an academic setting. The SGC Squad is relatively new; we’ve only existed since Fall 2001. Yet past team members have already participated in tournaments at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, the University of Florida, Valdosta State University, the University of South Florida, Valencia Community College, Middle Georgia College, Bainbridge College, Gulf Coast Community College, Georgia Perimeter College, and Tallahassee Community College. In 2004, SGC played in the National Championship Tourney at Washington University (St. Louis).  This past April, we competed in the same tourney at Tulane University in New Orleans.

Two teams of up to four players square off against each other in every round. The rounds consist of 20 tossup questions that are open for anyone on either team to answer. Players use a hand-held buzzer that they press when they know the answer. It’s every person for themselves on the tossups; no talking between team members is allowed. If the answer is correct, the team gets 10 points and a chance to cash in on a bonus question that their member alone have a chance to answer. The bonuses are worth up to 30 points. But be careful...if you buzz in before the moderator had finished reading the question and are wrong, your team has 5 points taken AND the opposition has the question all to themselves. When a team answers a bonus, they may discuss the possible answers among themselves and the team Captain tells relays the response to the moderator. When the bonus is finished, another tossup is read. After all tossups are read, the scores are tallied and a winner is declared. Time to go to the next round!

If you’re enrolled for any classes at SGC, YOU ARE!!!! The most frequent response students initially have to the Quiz Team is that, I’m not smart enough to do that. You may be surprised. If you enjoy one specific topic, are always reading, love to watch Jeopardy, or just know a lot of stuff, you could help the team out. Questions cover a lot of topics: Literature, Television, History, Sports, Mythology, Religion, Chemistry, Music, Astronomy, Art...the list goes on and on. You don’t have to be an expert on any topic. You just need to enjoy learning and enjoy competing in a forum that rewards intelligence. In addition, the Quiz Team looks great on a resume and could help you attain a scholarship when you transfer to a four-year college. Plus, we have a ton of fun on the tournament trips. SGC covers all expenses with the exception of some meals, and all missed classes are excused.
