Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)
What do I need to bring to connect my computer to the internet?
Tiger Village I, the building is not wireless, so a CAT5 (Ethernet) cable will
be required (available at Wal-Mart). Tiger Village II is 100% wireless, so a
wireless network card is all that is required.
What to bring?
- Personal toiletries (soap, shampoo, shave cream, etc.)
- towels, washcloths (at least 2 sets)

- blanket, pillow, pillow cases
- laundry bag, detergent , fabric softener, stain remover

- raincoat and umbrella
- desk lamp/floor lamp (no halogen bulbs) Each room comes equipped with
lighting, so if you would like additional lighting, it is your responsibility to
provide.

- small hand-held vacuum folding drying rack
- sewing kit
- stationery and office supplies

- Dry erase board (for outside your door/messages). Please remember that it must
remove cleanly from the door. Any damage done to the door will be assessed upon
checkout.

You are responsible for cleaning
your own room and bathroom- coordinate with roommate to share purchasing of
cleaning supplies for the bathroom
A special note about bicycles
you are welcomed to bring your bike, but you
cannot store it in your room. Bike racks are provided around the residence
halls-be sure to bring a strong U-shaped lock (not a cable lock)!
What not to bring?
- alcoholic beverages (we are an alcohol free campus)
- candles
- fireworks
- weapons
- illegal drugs
- incense
- any appliance with an open or exposed heating element
- lofts
- masking tape, nails, other products which damage or deface painted walls
- pets
- personal door locks
- traditional extension cords
- Air conditioners/space heaters (window or floor units)- Ceiling fans are
installed in every room and suites are individually temperature controlled.
NOTE: No open flame device is allowed in any residence hall.
Appliances that
generate high temperatures (generally over 140 degrees such as a George Foreman
grill, portable deep fat fryers, space heaters) are not allowed. If it glows, it
goes!
What furniture (dimensions)/Amenities are supplied in the room?
Each bedroom has 1 bed (mattresses are 36” by 82” by 7”), 1 four drawer chest
(24" by 36"), 1 desk (24" by 42"), and 1 chair. Blinds are included. Rooms are not carpeted. Please see the
suite layout for further detail.
Do I have to pack up my room between Fall and Spring Semesters?
Residents who plan to continue living on campus another term can receive
permission to leave items in their suite/rooms. Risks are assumed by the
resident; the college is not liable for damages or losses. Residents not
planning to return the next semester must clean their suite/rooms and return the
furnishings to their original locations prior to leaving. If a resident believes
that he/she will not pass the required 6 hours to remain in the residence halls,
should take his/her belongings home at the end of the term. If the resident
takes home his/her belongings believing that he/she will not meet the 6 hour
requirement but does after grades are posted, then his/her room assignment will
be re-instated.
What are the visitation hours?
Visitation hours are posted by the Residence Life Coordinator and are subject to
change. For safety measures, residents must register all visitors at the Front
Desk and escort them to and from their room. The guest may visit only the room
for which they are registered and must be escorted by the resident at all times.
Current visitation for Tiger I & II is as follows: Sunday - Wednesday 10:00 AM
to 12:00 AM and Thursday- Saturday 10:00 AM to 2:00 AM.
Are candles/incense allowed in the room?
No. Candles and incense are not allowed in the suite/room.
What happens if I lose my keys?
There are two ways to enter your room. The first is through your ID/Keycard.
This will give you access to the common area of your room. If the ID/Keycard is
lost, there is a $10 charge for the first keycard lost. Higher fees may be
assessed for subsequent losses. If you have lost your key that gives you access
to your bedroom, there is a $100 replacement fee. Excessive lockouts
(key/keycard) may be assessed at the discretion of the Residence Life
Coordinator.
Am I required to have a meal plan?
Yes. All students living in a Residence Hall are required to have a
meal plan.
Can I have a friend overnight?
Overnight guests must be approved during normal business hours posted by the
Residence Life Coordinator. Only guests of the same gender are allowed. Each
resident is allowed 3 overnight visits per calendar month.
How do I get my mail? And what is my address?
Campus mailboxes for all residential students are located in the Clower Center.

Are Freshmen allowed to have cars on campus?
All students are allowed to have a car on campus as long as it is registered
with Public Safety. All fees are included in matriculation fees. You may contact
Public Safety for more information at 912-260-4401 or Shannon Hall.
Do the Residence Halls have curfews?
No. We believe that students are responsible for their own actions which include
the determination of a bedtime.
How many phone lines are in a room?
Each suite/room has a phone jack. Residents desiring phone service assume this
expense and must make arrangements with the local telephone company.
Is there a separate bill for cable and phone?
Cable is included in the contract rate. Telephone service is not included. If
you would like telephone service, please contact Windstream at 1-800-501-1754
for activation.
Do the Residence Halls have wireless access?
All of Tiger II has wireless access, and Tiger I has wireless access in the
common areas, such as lobby, study rooms, and Terrace level lobby.
Do the Residence Halls have cable TV access?
Expanded basic cable service is provided in each room at no additional cost to
the student. It is the responsibility of the student to bring a television and
cable to access this service.
Are there washers & dryers in every Residence Hall? How much do they cost?
Washing Machines and dryers are located on the first floor in every Residence
Hall. The machines are coin operated and they can also use flex money placed on
student’s ID card. Washing machines are $1.25 per load and dryers are also $1.25
per load.
Do the Residence Halls have Kitchen areas?
No. Each Residence Hall comes with a kitchenette that includes a microwave,
refrigerator, sink, and dishwasher. Each kitchenette is located on the Terrace
level lobby.
Do the Residence Halls have air conditioning? Is it self-controlled?
Yes. All Residence Halls have air conditioning and each suite is self
controlled.
Are alcoholic beverages allowed?
No. South Georgia College complies with all of the requirements of the Drug-Free
Schools and Communities Act, as amended.
Are there any co-ed buildings?
No. Tiger I houses men and Tiger II houses women.
Where is parking for Residence Hall students?
Parking is conveniently located adjacent to each building. Parking permits are
free and required for all vehicles (Public
Safety). Please see the campus map for more details.
Is tutoring available?
Yes, tutoring is available. Please see posted signs around your Residence
Hall or check with your Residence Life Coordinator for more details. You may
also check the SGC website for an
updated
schedule. SGC’s Academic Support Center (ASC) carries most books that
are currently used on campus and has tutors that can help you with all of
your classes. The ASC is located in Powell Hall room 216.
What are the Dining Hall hours?
The Dining Hall will be located in front of the Clower Center and is open from
7:00am until 7:00pm Monday through Friday and 11:00am until 7:00pm Saturday and
Sunday.
Is Student Health Insurance offered? Is it mandatory?
SGC urges students to carry sickness and accident insurance. International
students are required to carry such insurance. The Voluntary Student Insurance
Program Premiums cost about $900 per year, or can be purchased by the semester.

Who is in charge of the building if a student needs assistance with a
concern/problem?
The first resource for resolving a concern is your Resident Assistant. Many
times, they have addressed similar concerns with other students and may be able
to assist you. If not, please feel free to visit with your Residence Life

Is there banking service on campus?
There is no banking service. However, we do have an ATM in the Library.
Are there smoking/non-smoking rooms?
All Residence Halls are non-smoking. Smoking is not permitted within 25 feet of
any entrance or stairwell.
How many hours do I have to be enrolled to live in the Residence Halls?
To be eligible to continue living on campus, residents are required to enroll
for a minimum of 12 hours each fall and spring semester, and 6 hours for the
summer term. Residents enrolled for less than the minimum number of hours must
request in writing and receive approval from the Director of Residence Life.
Failure to attend classes regularly is grounds for removal from the residence
hall. Residents must pass or receive an IP grade in 6 or more semester hours to
be eligible to reside on campus during their next term of enrollment at SGC.
Exceptions may be given by consideration of the Housing Committee.
When is the application deadline?
There is no housing available for Maymester. Summer Semester 2011
deadline is May 5, 2011. Fall Semester 2011 deadline is July 29, 2011. For

When can I move in?
Move-in dates change from semester to semester. Please check our
Residence Life
website for more up to date information
Can I move in early?
Yes. Residence Life charges $50 per night prior to the posted move in date. Once
a key is issued to a student, the per night charge will commence. The earliest a
student can return is 7 days prior to the posted move in date.
Can I have pets?
No animals, with the exception of fish in properly maintained aquariums of 20
gallons or less, will be allowed inside the residence hall. SGC comply with the
American’s with Disabilities Act and arrangements can be made through the
Department of Residence Life & Housing.
Do I have to exit Learning Support before living on campus?
No. All students are eligible to live on campus as long as they complete a
minimum of 6 hours per semester, are in good standing with the office of student
conduct, and pass a criminal background check.
Do I need a computer?
No. Computer labs are available to all residential students within the Residence
Halls. While not mandatory, they are encouraged.
If I damage something, how will I be charged?
Residents are responsible for the condition of their suite/rooms and all the
furnishings which are assigned to that suite/room. Residents are financially
responsible for these accommodations and furnishings, and shall reimburse the
College for any damages or loss of these items. Residents may also be required
to share the expense of repairing or replacing any property in common areas
(such as hallways, study areas or lobbies) when such repairs are determined to
be above and beyond normal wear and tear. Charges for damages and cleaning will be determined by the College at its sole discretion.
With the Residence Life Coordinator’s approval, residents may repair or replace
damaged items. Failure to pay damage charges will result in a resident's records
being placed on hold, which prevents him/her from registering, obtaining
transcripts or receiving grades.
What is the decoration policy?
Decoration is encouraged in the Residence Hall as well as the individual
suite/room. In order to prevent damage to the suite/rooms, limitations must be
placed on the types of adhesives and hangers that may be used. No nail/screw
holes should be made in the walls. Bulletin boards or tack strips should be used
whenever possible. If it is necessary to place something on a painted surface, a
good grade of masking tape will normally not result in damage to a painted
surface as long as the masking tape is carefully removed. No stickers other than
the College inventory number are to be placed on suite/room doors, furniture or
glass surfaces. Residents are responsible for all damages to a suite/room beyond
normal wear and tear.
What if I need special accommodations?
SGC strives to meet the needs of students with physical challenges. It is our
goal to provide service and resources that will reduce barriers and help
students maximize the college experience. Information regarding physical and

accommodations page.
Who is responsible for cleaning the rooms & bathroom?
Each room will be cleaned prior to a student’s arrival. However, students are
required to maintain a certain level of cleanliness as to not attract rodents or
bugs. It is the student’s responsibility to keep their bathroom and bedroom
clean, while occupying it. Housekeeping will maintain common area space only.
How long is my contract?
The Residence Hall Application and Contract cover one academic year, consisting
of fall and spring semesters. Renewal Forms are required for summer semester. A
new Residence Hall Application (with fee) and Contract are required each new
school year, beginning in the fall. The contract defines the terms and
conditions of occupancy and the procedures for termination. As a matter of
contract, South Georgia College has the authority to deny campus housing to
individuals who have been convicted of crimes or have shown patterns of behavior
that, in the judgment of the Director of Residence Life, suggests that they
could have an adverse impact on the educational environment and the health and
safety of others. Please review the housing

Should I participate in Orientation?
Yes! Orientation is called ROAR (Resident
Orientation and Registration). It's mandatory and extremely beneficial.
Research continues to show that students who actively participate in all
orientation events start off better than those who do not attend all the
events. Currently Fall 2011 ROAR is set for June 10, 24, July 15, & 29 2011.
You MUST register for ROAR prior to coming to campus.
Are there vending machines in the residence halls?
Yes, various soft drink and snack vending machines are located throughout campus
as well as in each Residence Hall.
