  Who and When to refer?

Students are more likely to seek assistance from friends and/or Faculty/Staff but may have trouble soliciting their help. If a student approaches you with a problem try talking privately with them about the problem(s) at hand in a nonjudgmental manner. You may also let the student know that you are concerned and you care about their well-being. If you feel that the student needs further assistance then encourage them to set up an appointment with the counselor.

Look for visual signs that may indicate a student is in need of counseling:

  • The student remains distressed following repeated attempts by you and others to be helpful.
  • The student becomes increasingly isolated, unkempt, irritable, or disconnected.
  • The student’s academic or social performance deteriorates.
  • The student’s behavior reflects increased hopelessness or helplessness.
  • You find yourself doing ongoing counseling rather than consultation or advising and feeling yourself pulled in directions with which you are uncomfortable.
  • The student shows significant and marked changes in behavior and mood.
