What is Orientation all about?
Orientation is designed to ease you through the many 'firsts' that entering
college represents. Through various workshops, presentations, and small group
discussions, we hope to make the beginning of your college career an exciting
and successful experience. By the time you leave orientation, you will:
- Know a great deal more about the College.
- Know how to navigate the many resources available to you.
- Have new connections with your fellow students.
Am I required to stay in housing during
orientation?
Yes. All ROAR students are required to stay in housing Friday and Saturday
night. You will be assigned to a room in Tiger Village II (Which is
traditionally our women’s residence hall) during ROAR
Is orientation mandatory?
Yes, all new residential students are required to attend orientation. During
orientation, students will receive their class schedule, and learn how to be
successful in and out of the classroom.
Family members or guests are not required to attend, but attending the program
is an excellent opportunity for family members/guests to learn more about South
Georgia College and get questions answered. Families may not want to bring small
children due to the format of the program.
Is overnight Housing
available for family?
No. Housing is only available to the SGC Freshman. (Area Hotels,
area Google map)
Where is parking during
orientation?
Parking will be in the Tiger Village I parking lot, which is located in between
Richey Hall and Tiger Village I.
What is the
suggested attire during orientation?
Dress is casual during orientation. Make sure you wear comfortable clothes and
shoes because you will be doing a considerable amount of walking during the
program. While Douglas temperatures range from the mid-to-high 90's in the
summer, the meeting areas are air conditioned and can be quite chilly, so be
prepared. Bring an umbrella, just in case, since summer weather can be
unpredictable!
What do I need to bring
to orientation?
Bring money for any type of snacks you might want. We have snack and soda
machines located throughout campus. Also bring an umbrella, an alarm clock,
blanket, pillow, twin size long sheets or a sleeping bag, towel, toiletries,
notebook, and pen. Casual clothes and comfortable, closed-toe shoes (sneakers)
for walking around campus. Make sure that you also bring any financial aid
information that you still need to turn in and your immunization form (if you
have not already turned it in).
What not to bring:
- Drugs, alcohol, or weapons
- Friends
- Pets
- Valuable jewelry
How long is orientation?
Orientation starts on Friday morning at approximately 8 am and ends on Sunday
around noon. Please see the posted schedule.
Does it matter which orientation
session I attend? Will I be able to get a good schedule of classes if I attend a
later session?
With the exception of athletes, it does not matter which orientation session you
attend. All incoming Freshmen have their schedules made for them, so no special
treatment is given for those who attend earlier sessions.
What if I need to
change my orientation date?
You can send an email to
housing@sgc.edu to
request a change. Depending on the availability of the date requested, you may
or may not receive the date change.
