What is the difference in a nontraditional and traditional student?

Nontraditional students have been out of high school at least five years where as traditional students are entering college after high school graduation.

What are the high school grade point average requirements?

College Preparatory Curriculum: 2.0, Technical Preparatory Curriculum: 2.2

What is the difference between degree seeking and nondegree seeking at South Georgia College?

South Georgia College offers three degree options for degree seeking students — the Associate of Arts (A.A.), the Associate of Science (A.S.) and Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.). Students who want to transfer to a four–year college or university pursue an A.A. or A.S. degree. Students who want to obtain a degree in a specified area of expertise pursue an A.A.S. degree. Non–degree seeking students are not trying to earn a degree. They may be taking classes for work advancement, to transfer credit back to another college or for personal enrichment.

What college entrance tests are required?

Two-year colleges require a placement exam known as the COMPASS test. Students can be exempt from this test if they meet criteria that include SAT scores of 430 verbal, 400 math or ACT scores of 17 verbal, 17 math. The student must also graduate from high school with a college prep or dual diploma. It is recommended that students planning to enroll in transfer programs leading to baccalaureate degrees take the national SAT.

When can I take the COMPASS test?

Students who are required to take the COMPASS test should call the enrollment services at 912.260.4206 to schedule a convenient testing time. Testing is available on Tuesday and Thursday 10 AM and 3 PM.

Are financial aid and scholarships available?

Yes! We can help you identify which federal, state or local financial aid packages you may be eligible to receive. Students that apply for financial aid (including HOPE or foundation scholarships) should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Online forms are available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Is student housing available?

Yes! We are proud to offer new apartment-style student housing for fall 2007, in addition to our current dorms. Students may apply for housing online or contact enrollment services. There is a $30.00 application fee for housing and we can take requests for roommates.

Can I be accepted if I graduated from high school with a tech prep diploma?

Yes! All students who graduate with a tech prep diploma are required to take the COMPASS test.

What if I did not graduate from high school?

You must pass the GED exam in order to be accepted into South Georgia College.

Will my credits from South Georgia College transfer to other institutions?

Yes! We have many transfer programs to choose from that will be accepted at other colleges or universities towards a Bachelor’s Degree.

Can I transfer credits from other institutions to South Georgia College?

Yes! Transfer credit from accredited institutions is evaluated on a class by class basis toward transfer into South Georgia College. Most credits from other University System schools will be accepted. However, most credits from technical schools are not transferable to South Georgia College.

When can I visit the campus?

We offer tours by appointment during the week on Tuesday and Thursday 1-5 PM and Friday 9-11AM. You may call Admissions to schedule your visit (912.260.4206).

Will someone help me choose the right classes?

After you are registered, you will be assigned an advisor who will assist you with registration. The assigned advisor will be available by appointment before each registration period to ensure you are registering for the right classes for your degree program.

Are there scholarships available?
