Frequently Asked Questions Concerning Admission for Students
Whose Primary Language is not English
- What are the basic expectations for English language abilities for entry into
South Georgia College?
South Georgia College expects students to have a sufficient grasp of the English
language to be successful in an English-speaking classroom.
- How may I demonstrate my English language ability?
There are several ways to demonstrate English competency at South Georgia
College.
- Graduate from a high school where English was the primary language of
instruction. Successful completion of an English language GED is comparable.
- Score at least 193 on the computerized version of the Test of English as a
Foreign Language (TOEFL).
- Transfer sufficient credit from an English-speaking post-secondary institution
to demonstrate proficiency in English. This is evaluated on a case-by-case
basis.
- Score at least 330 on the Critical Reading section of the SAT or 12 on the
English section of the ACT.
- Does South Georgia College have an ESOL (English as a Second or Other
Language) program?
Not at this time. Establishment of an ESOL program requires approval at the
University System of Georgia office.
- What resources are available to me?
English as a Second Language Opportunities in Douglas/Coffee County
- How do you register for the ACT, SAT or TOEFL?
Register for the ACT at
www.act.org. The SAT and TOEFL are administered by the
Educational Testing Service. See www.ets.org for registration information.
- Are there graduation requirements that might be problems for students who are
non-native English speakers?
All students must pass Regents’ Testing Requirements. Please see the Chair of
the Humanities/Learning Support division for information on special procedures.
