SGC to Host Ruth Berry and Continuo Collective of the
South on Oct. 30
South
Georgia College is pleased to announce that its second cultural event of the
academic year, cellist Ruth Berry and the Continuo Collective of the South,
will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. in Peterson Hall’s McGouirk
Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public, and is co-hosted by
the Coffee Alliance for the Arts.
Berry, a cellist, music educator, artistic director and administrator, gives
recitals of popular classics with Duo and Trio Intermezzo, is a member of
the Magellan String Quartet, is Artistic Director and co-founder of the
musician-run chamber orchestra, Lyra Vivace, and manages the unique musician
booking service, In Praise of Music.
Her Tin Pail Tales interactive performances for pre-school children are in
high demand at Early Childhood learning centers and other literacy
development programs and her Global Navigation with the Magellan String
Quartet programs are enjoyed by K-6 graders throughout Georgia. During the
summers, she performs with Glimmerglass Opera, where she specializes in solo
continuo work for 17th- and 18th-century repertoire.
Berry has taught cello, music theory and music appreciation at Georgia
Southern University during the 18-year faculty residency of the Magellan
String Quartet. Berry has held several principal cello positions (including
16 years as Principal Cello of the Augusta Symphony), has worked as
education director and grants administrator with the Greenville (S.C.)
Symphony, and has recorded on the Spectrum and Nonesuch labels. She
completed a Bachelor's degree at Boston University School of Music and a
Master's at Cornell University. She lives in Evans with her husband, Michael
Boardman.
At the Oct. 30 performance, she will be joined onstage by the harpsichord,
violin and flute.
