SGC’s Harrison Ties School Record, Worthy and Evans
Break Into Top 10 Overall
Sophomore
Charley Harrison (Wayne County) tied the South Georgia College women’s cross
country school record with a 21:34 at the Skiles Farm Invitational near
Albany on Saturday, Sept. 29, while freshmen Wesley Worthy (Bradwell
Institute) and Timmy Evans (Valdosta High School) turned two of the fastest
times in the history of the South Georgia College men’s cross country
program. Harrison, who now shares the record with fellow sophomore Tia
Ponsell (Pierce County), finished sixth overall in the women’s race.
Worthy’s 29:11 placed him fifth in the men’s race while Evans finished in
29:12 one place back.
The race took place on a challenging course in the red clay hills west of
Albany. Typically, this meet is a good mid-season test of fitness. The route
is tough but teams are starting to find their form as the conference finals
loom just a few weeks down the road. “Overall, I was pleased with the way we
ran. Wesley and Timmy continue to run strong week after week, and the times
they ran Saturday are among the top 10 fastest in the history of our
program. I can’t say enough about Charley. She is consistent on every
training run and in every meet we do. She has been working non-stop for a
year and is one of the conference’s best runners,” says head coach Robert
Preston Jr.
The
men’s team finished in second place while the women came in fourth. Here are
how the rest of the men’s team fared: Richard Smith (30:15, ninth), Lyndon
Jones (30:30, 10th), Juan Castanon (31:24, 13th), Pedro Martinez (32:48,
14th) and Jose Castanon (34:34, 17th). After Harrison, the women finished as
follows: Ponsell (24:02, 20th), Christine Johnston (25:03, 22nd), Samantha
Arroyo (25:17, 23rd), Tori Irvin (25:42, 24th) and Elizabeth Wilder (29:27,
27th).
The cross country team competed in the Point University Invitational on
Friday, Oct. 5. Results were unavailable at press time. The Tigers host a
home meet on Friday, Oct. 12, then do not race again until the conference
finals in Marietta on Oct. 26.
