SGC Men Shock Georgia Perimeter 2-1 in Overtime, Ranked
12th in Nation
The South Georgia College men’s soccer team, currently
ranked 12th in the country, picked up a season-defining win Saturday when
the Tigers defeated the Georgia Perimeter College Jaguars 2-1 in overtime.
Moussa Ba found the back of the net 2:30 into the extra period after a late
goal in regulation by GPC’s Richard Mealey tied the game 1-1.
“I told the boys all week that we needed a signature win. If we wanted to be
looked at as a national contender, we needed to beat someone that was good.
Saturday we did this, we beat a national contender. Our team defense is
getting better every day. Our guys fought and defended the entire game. Our
forwards and midfielders got beat up all game, but they continued to fight
and came out on top. Our boys deserve all the credit for being ranked 12th,”
said head coach Ben Horner.
About 20 minutes into the game, Ba scored on a free kick to go up 1-0. At
the end of the game, GPC tied the score when the Jaguars knocked the ball
out of keeper Jordan Crown’s hand and it rolled into the net. The game went
into overtime, and Ba ended the contest with a goal early in the extra
frame.
“On Tuesday we host the #1 team in the country, and we have been talking all
week about the historic nature of upsetting a collegiate #1 team. Not many
people can say that they have done that and if we play properly our boys
will be able to say that Tuesday night,” said Coach Horner.
Tuesday, Oct. 2, top-ranked Darton College comes to Douglas for an important
5 p.m. showdown on the SGC pitch. The women, who defeated Darton earlier in
the year, play the Cavaliers at 3 p.m.
