SGC Soccer Defeats Andrew College, Lady Tigers Fall to GPC in OT

The South Georgia College women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season last Friday 2-1 in overtime against the Georgia Perimeter Jaguars on SGC’s home pitch. The Lady Tigers rebounded on Tuesday with a 6-0 win over visiting Andrew College. The men also defeated Andrew on Tuesday 9-0.

Against Georgia Perimeter, the Lady Tigers scored in the first half on a free kick from Taylor Rushworth. With about 10 minutes left in the game, the Jaguars broke through the SGC defense and scored the tying goal. In overtime, the Jaguars scored on a goal from 25 yards out. The ball hit the bottom of the crossbar and ricocheted in the net. “Our girls played great. GPC is a great team and we realize that we can compete with anyone in the country. To win close games like this you have to finish your chances and we missed four good chances at goal. Also, you must get a little bit of luck. The luck was in their favor today and not ours,” stated head coach Ben Horner following the game.

On Tuesday, the ladies dominated Andrew College. Kayla Herman, Taylor Green, Catherine Clarke, CiCi Cooper, Diamond Sneed and Haley Pinkerton scored a goal apiece, while Cooper (3), Herman (1) and Ashley Mosher (2) assisted. Keeper Courtisha Ebanks had a pair of saves as well.

In the men’s game, Moussa Ba (5), Lloyd Matthews (2) Alloy Buckle (1) and Kjair Prather (1) found the back of the net. Assists came from Ba (1), Matthews (4), Buckle (1) and Roulf Aladin (1). Keeper duties were shared between Jordan Crown (45 minutes, 0 goals allowed, 2 saves) and Shakir Jarrett (45 minutes, 0 goals allowed, 1 save).

The men are now 8-1 on the season and have won five in a row. The women are 7-1 on the season. After playing in Douglas on Sept. 21, the Lady Tigers are off until Oct. 2 when rival Darton College comes to town for a 3 p.m. game. The men travel to Georgia Perimeter on Sept. 22 then face Darton at 5 p.m. on Oct. 2 as well.
