Tigers Win Two in a Row

Catcher Tyler Bashlor’s seventh inning triple that scored center fielder Logan Miller proved to be the difference in the South Georgia College Tigers’ 3-2 win over the West Georgia Technical College Golden Knights Tuesday in Carrollton. Shortstop Brandon Cruce also played a pivotal role in the victory with two hits and two RBI, including an RBI double in the sixth inning.

The Tigers also defeated Glen Oaks College (Michigan) 13-3 Wednesday afternoon at George Cook Stadium.

The Knights began playing baseball last year and is one of the newest members of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association’s Region 17. Tuesday was the first time SGC and WGTC have played each other in baseball. In addition to the game being the first between these two ball clubs, the game also gave SGC’s Jeff Timothy his first conference win as head coach.

The Golden Knights took advantage of an SGC error in the bottom of the first and took an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers answered with a run of their own. Cruce singled to score first baseman Brett Polachek, who led off the inning with a double. Cruce broke the tie in the sixth inning with a double that scored right fielder Luke Anderson. WGTC tied the game in the bottom of the sixth thanks to three straight singles.

SGC wasn’t content to let the Knights hang around for long. Miller reached base on one-out single in the seventh. He moved to second on a Kaleb Holbrook ground-out. Then Bashlor tripled to right-center, scoring Miller easily to take a 3-2 lead. The one-run advantage proved to be all the Tigers needed to earn their first conference win of the season.

Starter Spencer Thomas (1-0, 2.13) came away with the win in six innings of work. Mikey Rodriguez (0-4, 3.53) threw two innings in relief, while Walker White (2-4, 3.41) pitched the final inning for the save – his first of the year as well.

Wednesday afternoon, the Tigers scored in six of eight innings to defeat Glen Oaks 13-3. Tyler Bashlor (1) homered and second baseman D.J. Barnett had three hits and three RBI on the day. Willacoochee’s Bryan McKinnon (2-0, 6.00), who started and didn’t give up a run in three innings, was the pitcher of record for the Tigers.

This weekend, West Georgia comes to town for a three-game series that begins on Friday afternoon. The two teams play Friday at 6 p.m., then square off again for a double-header on Saturday beginning at noon. Admission is $5.
