SGC Tigers Open Season This Weekend
This weekend, baseball season begins in Coffee County.
On Saturday, Jan. 28, the South Georgia College Tigers open the 2012
campaign with a three-game set against the Santa Fe College Saints. The
series was originally supposed to begin on Friday, but Thursday night’s
thunderstorm delayed game one. The series features two of the top-ranked
junior college baseball teams in the country; Santa Fe is ranked #12 in the
nation in the pre-season polls, while SGC broke into the top 10 at the #8
spot.
The 2012 season is the beginning of a new era for the Tigers. For the first
time in 21 years, Scott Sims will not be in the dugout for SGC. Coach Sims
retired in August, and was succeeded by long-time assistant coach Jeff
Timothy. Coach Timothy has been an SGC assistant for eight years, and has
been coaching in Region XVII of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association
for a decade.
First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday at George Cook Stadium.
Sunday’s double-header begins at 1 p.m.
