SGC Men Win, Women Finish Second at LaGrange College

The South Georgia College swim team kicked off its 2012 half of the season with an impressive victory by the men’s team and a good showing by a depleted women’s team. The Tigers were on the road last weekend for a two-date meet at LaGrange College. The men dominated a three-team field of host LaGrange and Warren Wilson College, amassing 120 points to WWC’s 43. Lagrange was third with 18 points. Despite having just six swimmers, the Tiger women had a good showing, finishing second only to Brenau University while defeating Warren Wilson and LaGrange in a four-team meet.

“Our men took care of business, but I am especially proud of our women. After losing three swimmers since the start of the season, they really stepped up and contributed points in some different events to get back some of our usual points,” stated head coach C.M. Jenkins. “ As a team, all of our swimmers really competed well both days.”

Winning first places for the Tiger women were Shelby Rumker in the 100 back, 50 free and 100 free; Amanda Bennet in the 1,650 free; and Kaitlyn Ward set a new school record in the 400 yard individual medley.

Top finishers for the men were T.J. Crossland in the 100 fly, 100 back and 50 free; Joey Materne in the both the 200 and 400 yard individual medley as well as the 500 free; Paul Poorman in the 1,000 yard and 1,650 yard distance free events; Erik Montgomery in the 200 free; Zack Moon in the 100 breast; and Les Scott in the 100 free.

The Tigers will travel to Rome this weekend for the Berry College Invitational.
