Phi Theta Kappa Honors SGC’s Amy Hancock
Ms. Amy Hancock, Coordinator of Grants and Special Programs
and Phi Theta Kappa advisor at South Georgia College, has been named one of
25 Faculty Scholars for 2012 by the prestigious international scholastic
honor society.
Ms.
Hancock was chosen from among nearly 3,000 chapter advisors for Phi Theta
Kappa to serve as a Faculty Scholar. In the position, she will play a key
role in helping the society achieve its mission of recognizing and
encouraging academic achievement among college students.
“It is an honor to be selected as a Faculty Scholar and to represent South
Georgia College,” says Ms. Hancock, who has been at SGC since 2008 and is an
advisor to the College’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter. “Being a part of Phi Theta
Kappa has been a wonderful experience. The members of our chapter are
dedicated not only to activities that will enable them to be more productive
in the future, but also to projects and experiences that enrich the entire
campus community.”
Ms. Hancock is the only Faculty Scholar from Georgia. Phi Theta Kappa is the
largest honor society in higher education, with 1,275 chapters on college
campuses in every state in the U.S. and in nearly 10 other nations. More
than 2.5 million students have been inducted since PTK’s founding in 1918,
with approximately 125,000 student inducted annually.
As a Faculty Scholar, Ms. Hancock will attend the annual Faculty Scholar
Conference, sponsored in part by the National Endowment of the Humanities,
at Phi Theta Kappa’s Center of Excellence in Jackson, Mississippi, February
1 – 5, 2012.
During the Faculty Scholar Conference, the Scholars will prepare to serve as
facilitators during Phi Theta Kappa’s Honors Institute, to be held in
Denver, Colorado in June. While attending the Honors Institute the Scholars
will lead groups of 15 – 20 honor students in seminar discussions of the
issues presented by experts on the Honors Study topic throughout the week.
The Scholars will attend Part II of the Faculty Scholar Conference prior to
the Honors Institute.
“The Faculty Scholar Conference is recognized internationally as one of the
finest professional development programs available for community college
faculty and staff members,” said Phi Theta Kappa’s Executive Director Dr.
Rod Risley. “Intense training is provided by nationally recognized scholars
to prepare the Faculty Scholars to serve as facilitators for the Honors
Institute, which is attended by approximately 400 Phi Theta Kappa members
and chapter advisors from around the world, and praised as ‘the crown jewel
of honors programming experiences.’”
Scholars were selected through a rigorous application process based on the
knowledge of the 2012-2013 Honors Study Topic, “The Culture of Competition,”
and demonstrated excellence in teaching or administration.
