Former SGC Head Coach Elected to NJCAA Baseball Hall of
Fame
Former South Georgia College head baseball coach Scott Sims
has been elected to the National Junior College Athletic Association
Baseball Hall of Fame as recognition of his 21 years as head coach of the
Tigers. Coach Sims retired at the end of the 2011 baseball season, in which
he led the Tigers to the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction,
Colorado, after winning the East Central District Championship in Tennessee.
The 2011 season was one of the most memorable of Coach Sims’s career. The
Tigers endured a season of adversity and came out of the Georgia Collegiate
Athletic Association’s Region XVII state tournament with a second place
finish. They advanced to the East Central District championships, and rolled
through the four-team, double-elimination tournament undefeated by winning
three games in a row to clinch a berth in the World Series for the first
time since 1970. By winning the East Central District title, Sims received
the Coach of the Year award for the district.
The Tigers played their first World Series game less than a week after
winning the district championship. SGC went 1-2 in Grand Junction, finishing
ahead of three teams that exited the tournament after losing two straight
games. After the World Series ended, Coach Sims, received the W. Homa Thomas
Sportsmanship Award to go with his district coach of the year trophy.
In 2010, Coach Sims was named GCAA Coach of the Year after the Tigers went
40-21 and finished third in the conference. This season, SGC ended the
season 34-33. Coach Sims leaves SGC with 585 career wins.
This year, Sims will return to Grand Junction, where he will be inducted
into the Hall of Fame at the 2012 JUCO World Series.
