SGC Swimmers Place Second, Third at LaGrange
SGC’s swimming Tigers had another good showing this weekend in LaGrange
College.
The South Georgia women’s team placed second in the four-team meet while the
Men’s squad finished third. Darton College won the meet, Berry College
finished second on the men’s side and third in the women’s competition. Host
LaGrange College finished fourth on both sides.
“Our team raced well all day Saturday and despite a long week of practice,
we had several personal bests at the meet,” stated head coach C.M. Jenkins.
“Our men were short-handed due to leaving two swimmers in Douglas because of
illness and did not score as well as last weekend.”
SGC’s men shined in the distance events, winning both the 1,000 and the 500
yard races. Paul Poorman won a very close 1,000 and Joey Materne set a new
school record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:07.2.
T.J. Crossland had four second place finishes on the day in the 100 and 200
yard backstroke, 100 fly and 50 free. Zack Moon finished second in 200
individual medley by breaking the school record with a time of 2:06.7, while
Materne fished second in the 200 butterfly.
Kaitlyn Ward and Shelby Rumker led the women with two second place finishes
each. Ward placed second in the 50 free and 200 yard breaststroke while
Rumker scored in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events.
The Tigers will take Thanksgiving week off and return to action Dec. 1 in
Savannah for the three-day Savannah College of Art and Design Invitational.
