Brian Brown to Present Vanishing South Georgia at SGC
Brian Brown, photographer and historian, will hold a lecture and book
signing at South Georgia College on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in the
Peterson Hall Art Gallery. He will share photo renditions in his collection
entitled Vanishing South Georgia, which exists primarily to bring attention
to the myriad forms of vernacular architecture once common throughout the
region.
Many of these structures were built during the sharecropping and tenant
farming eras, and as a result have long ago been abandoned. Since most
vernacular architecture is often dismissed by the preservation
establishment, there is very little effort to formally catalog it. Brown
hopes his photographs will contribute towards that goal.
He desires to bring attention to the many crossroads and small towns which
centuries ago were thriving centers of life and commerce. Most today are
mere ghost towns of their former selves, and with Vanishing South Georgia,
Brown hopes to give them a permanent photographic presence, for future
generations, whether their interests are trivial, genealogical, or
historical.
For more information on his work, visit his Web site at
www.vanishingsouthgeorgia.com.
He will have copies of his book, Vanishing Coffee County, available for
purchase.
Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.
