Tigers Fall to GPC, Still in Command of #2 Seed
Saturday, the South Georgia College men’s soccer team traveled to Georgia
Perimeter College and came home on the short end of a 4-2 contest.
The Tigers held a 2-0 lead with 25 minutes left in the game with a man up.
Then the floor fell out from beneath the SGC squad. “In my 24 years of
experience as a player and a coach, I never have witnessed four minutes like
I did today,” said head coach Ken Kirsch. The men were on a 375 minute
streak of not conceding a goal and in a four-minute span conceded four goals
and could not recover. “I consider our defense to be the best in the
conference and I would never have thought something like that could occur,”
said Kirsch. “We gave them every opportunity to remain in that game and it
should have never come down to that.”
Danny Zevallos put the Tigers on top off a beautiful header from a corner
kick. Alloy Buckle gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead 10 minutes into the second
half. The Tigers missed several chances to increase the lead and GPC took
advantage of their chances to gain momentum and ultimately the win. The
Tigers still sit in the driver seat for the second seed in their conference
tournament. “We will learn and grow from this,” noted Kirsch . “I fully
believe and trust this team and our confidence will not falter.”
Earlier in the week, the Tigers posted wins over Andrew College and Middle
Georgia College. The men traveled to Andrew on Tuesday and picked up a 4-0
win. Matheus Silva scored twice, Alloy Buckle added one and Luke Adams
finished off the scoring. Jordan Crown made six saves for his third shutout
on the year.
On Thursday, the men played their way to a thrilling 1-0 win over rival
Middle Georgia. Matheus Silva scored on an assist from Jon Clifford. In a
back and forth hard physical game the men kept composure and scored late in
the second half for the win. "It was great to get a win over MGC," said
captain Jon Clifford. "We played very poorly over there early in the season
and it was a championship quality performance from the team." Jordan Crown
was absolutely stellar in the game. He made 10 saves on 10 shots to secure
yet another shutout on the year and continued a 310-minute scoreless streak.
"We brought him here to be the rock in goal and give us a chance every
game," noted Coach Kirsch. "He made two outstanding saves and he has given
us a chance in every game this season."
The men travel to Spartanburg Methodist College in South Carolina on Friday
and finish the regular season on Sunday against Georgia Military College at
home on Sophomore Day.
