SGC Men Hold on to Second, Control Own Destiny
The South Georgia College Tigers men's soccer team went 1-0-1 last week to
push their record to 8-4-1 on the year and grab the second place spot in the
conference.
The men traveled to USC-Salkehatchie on Thursday and played to a 1-1 tie.
Head coach Ken Kirsch was pleased with their play but not the result. "We
had the ball on their half for the entire second half but we could not find
the back of the net. We are creating, playing good defense, but we are still
having issues with scoring goals," he said. Danny Zevallos scored his first
goal of the season, which was set up by Joe Alexander. The men carried the
play for most of the game and had some really good chances and hopefully
their work on the field will begin to produce more goals as the season moves
along. "We are playing well and I feel we could have the best defense in the
league," said Kirsch. "Hopefully our luck will change and our chances will
begin to become goals."
On Friday, the men hosted Gordon College and won 2-0. "Our goal is to be the
second seed in our conference tournament and we have put ourselves in that
position. Now, we control our own destiny," said Coach Kirsch. Alloy Buckle
and Matheus Silva ended their scoring drought of three games each to provide
the goals in the win. "I am a forward and it is difficult when you are not
scoring," said Buckle. "I put a lot of pressure on myself to help this team
win and I am glad I was able to score today." The men held possession very
well, keeping 72 percent possession even through a torrential downpour that
hit Douglas in the second half. Luke Adams continued his strong play in the
back anchoring a stingy defense. "He is the best defender in the
conference," said captain Jon Clifford. "I really enjoy playing with him in
the back." Jordan Crown recorded six saves for his third shutout on the
year.
The men have a tough week ahead but if things go well they could wrap up the
second seed by next week. "We have talked about playing at a certain
standard and taking advantage of opportunities and this is what we have,"
said Kirsch. "If we play the way I know we can, we should have a good week
and be in a position to automatically get to the Final Four." The men travel
to Andrew College on Tuesday. Results were unavailable at press time.
