Darton Bests SGC 1-0
Tuesday night, the SGC men’s soccer team faced its second nationally ranked
opponent in as many games. Just days after upsetting the #8 team in the
country, Georgia Perimeter, the Tigers squared off against #2 ranked Darton
College in Albany. SGC played the Cavaliers close but didn’t have the same
luck as they did against GPC. Darton slipped away with a 1-0 win
Darton scored a goal in the 14th minute to take a 1-0- lead and then
possessed their way to the win. The men drop to 4-3 in the conference and
are now 7-3 on the year. "Darton played a very good possession game
tonight," said head coach Ken Kirsch. "We did not have the energy level
needed to be successful tonight."
The Tigers mounted an attack late in the match but could not find the
equalizer. Darton was better for the first 60 minutes but the Tigers finally
got their legs and finished the final 30 minutes with a barrage of chances.
"We finished strong and competed until the end," said captain Jon Clifford,
"the last game took a lot out of us and we need to be better at the start of
the game." The Tigers now play two non-conference games. SGC is now in third
place in the GCAA Region 17 conference standings.
