SGC Men Poised to Make Run at Conference Title
The South Georgia College Tigers men’s soccer squad have completed their
pre-season games and look forward to starting the regular season. The men
went 3-1 in their four pre-season games, scoring a total of eight goals and
conceding only four goals. The men bring in a total of 17 new players and
mix them with seven returning players, and have the pieces in place for a
strong 2011 campaign. “We have more depth, more athleticism, and by far this
is my best technical squad I have had in my three years at SGC,” noted head
coach Ken Kirsch. “We have been able to focus on our tactical game more this
pre-season because of the quality of players we have.”
Led by captains Jon Clifford and Emanuel Goncavles, this year’s Tigers will
have a very strong defense. “We added another great center back in freshman
Luke Adams (England) and a stellar keeper in freshman Jordan Crown (Ocala),
which really will make our back line very difficult to penetrate,” noted Jon
Clifford. “We have set some stingy defensive goals this season.” With the
additions of freshman forward Alloy Buckle (South Florida), central
mid-field player Ricardo Lemos (Brazil, freshman) and Ryan Davidson
(England, freshman), along with returners Danny Zevallos, Ricky Garcia and
Matheus Silva, this should be a more dynamic offensive team for the Tigers.
“Over the past two seasons we truly only had one forward but finally we will
have several forwards and attacking players which should open up more space
and provide much needed depth scoring to our team, “ said Kirsch.
The men look to build upon last year’s semi-final appearance and hopefully
have a chance to compete for the conference championship. “I am very
optimistic about this squad,” said Kirsch. “This team has potential to be
our best yet in my short tenure here at SGC.”
