SGC to Offer New Degree Fall Semester In Health and Human Performance
Beginning in the Fall 2011 semester, South Georgia College will offer a new
course of study, an Associate of Science Degree in Health and Human
Performance.
The Health and Human Performance degree is for students who plan to transfer
into a wide range of bachelor’s degree programs, including athletic
training, sports medicine, physical therapy, or exercise science. Careers
such a degree can lead to are cardiac rehabilitation, wellness, private
corporate wellness and fitness, secondary and post-secondary education-based
athletic applications (including coaching), athletic training, and sports
medicine. Serving the healthcare needs of Georgia has long been an important
component of SGC’s curriculum, as evidenced by the number of high quality
nurses who enter the workforce through South Georgia’s respected nursing
program.
The Health and Human Performance degree provides an alternative to the
existing associate’s degree in Recreation, which focuses on leisure and
outdoor recreational activities. Health and Human Performance fills an
important niche in SGC’s academic program by providing a course of study for
students interested in athletic performance, conditioning, and injury
prevention.
“The area of health and human performance is a growing field, and there are
many different careers a student who obtains this degree could pursue. This
is an exciting addition to South Georgia College’s academic programs, and
helps us further diversify the extensive catalog of degrees we currently
offer. Our goal is always to enhance the academic experience of our
students, and having this degree available to our students is an important
and exciting way for us to accomplish that ongoing objective,” states Dr.
Virginia Carson, SGC President.
