Tigers End Skid, Outlast Warriors in Extra Innings
The South Georgia College Tigers emerged from last weekend’s
three-game set against Georgia Perimeter College frustrated and confused.
They didn’t play that bad against the Jaguars, but GPC swept the Tigers in
the last home games of the season. After four days off, the Tigers got a
chance at redemption against the mighty Middle Georgia Warriors in Cochran.
SGC outlasted Middle Georgia 9-8 in 11 innings, despite one of the sloppiest
ninth innings you could imagine.
The Tigers and the Warriors finished regulation tied at four runs apiece.
Neither team scored in the 10th inning. In the 11th, Hunter Ross led off the
inning with a walk. Jonathan Farabow singled up the middle, moving Ross over
to third. Dylan Wall, normally a pitcher but pinch hitting this late in the
game, bunted and moved to second on a throwing error by MGC pitcher Zack
Hayden. The error scored Ross and Farabow, which gave the Tigers a 6-4
advantage. But SGC wasn’t through yet. Kenny Sanderson walked and Kelcey
Butts followed with another bunt. Another throwing error by Hayden plated
Wall and Sanderson. After Logan Gaines walked, David Reid-Foley hit a
sacrifice fly to center. Butts, who had moved to third on a passed ball,
scored the fifth SGC run of the inning. The inning ended with SGC up 9-4, a
seemingly safe lead this late in the game.
But the Warriors weren’t ready to give up. They take advantage of every
opportunity they get, and the Tigers were about to give them all the
opportunity in the world. Butts, the fourth pitcher of the game for SGC,
started the inning and retired one batter and walked two. With one out and
runners on first and second, Tyler Ross came in the game. He hit Jake Fields
to load the bases. Then Caleb Bryson walked, which scored one run. Jakob
Nixon drew another walk, scoring another MGC run. SGC head coach Scott Sims
had seen enough and pulled Ross, replacing him with Mikey Rodriguez. Bo Way
hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Fields. The Warriors had scored three
runs without getting a hit. And they weren’t done yet. Brandon Brown singled
off Rodriguez, plating pinch runner Ben Dothan. That brought the Warriors
within one run of the Tigers. Rodriguez finally quelled the rally with a
strikeout to end the inning and the game.
Butts (4-0, 2.41) earned the win while Rodriguez picked up the save, his
fourth. Butts, Reid-Foley, Wall and Jeremy Donaldson each drove in two runs,
while Sanderson scored twice.
The Tigers are now 27-27 on the season and 14-12 in the conference with two
games remaining. Saturday, they return to Cochran for a double-header
against the Warriors.
