SGC Men End Spring Campaign with 5-0 Win

The SGC men’s soccer squad completed its 2011 spring season in good fashion on Sunday. The men won 5-0 against the U-18 South Georgia United Elite team finishing with an impressive 8-1-1 record. “I was pleased we met both of our spring season goals we set at the start,” noted head coach Ken Kirsch. “We focused on our team defense this spring and it showed in how we collectively defended in every game.”

Freshmen sensation Matheus Silva continued his strong spring with a three-goal performance. Felipe Nascimento ended his stellar career scoring a goal, while Joe Alexander netted the other goal on a brilliant shot. “I enjoyed my two years here and I learned a ton about the game as well as other important things,” said Nascimento.

The men found a scoring punch this spring, out-scoring their opponents by a margin of 43–7. “The two goals we set were to win 70 percent of our games and only concede seven goals all spring and we did both,” said Coach Kirsch. “I was glad to see the freshmen learn so much from my first recruiting class. I will truly miss all of the sophomores and I hope they leave this program better men then when they entered.” The fall season looks bright and Coach Kirsch has received 14 commitments so far for his 2011 class. “We would like to bring in 18 players this fall and the ones that are coming I feel will provide depth and much more athleticism on the field,” noted Coach Kirsch. Captain Emanuel Goncalves added, “This was a great spring season that should lead to a very strong fall campaign. I am excited to get after it in the fall.” The men have a 20-game schedule for the fall.
