Go-ahead Homer by Gaines in 7th Inning Gives Tigers Important Win

Thanks to a seventh inning two-run home run by shortstop Logan Gaines, the South Georgia College Tigers defeated the Middle Georgia College Warriors 7-6 on Tuesday night at George A. Cook Stadium in Douglas.

The home run, Gaines’s team-leading seventh of the season, was his only hit of the game. It couldn’t have come at a better time. The Warriors had built a commanding 6-1 lead by the fourth inning. Then SGC came alive and scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Tigers made the most out of three hits and two MGC errors to get to within one run of the Warriors.

In the bottom of the seventh, right fielder Brandon Cruce reached base on an error. Roderick Franklin followed with a sacrifice bunt that moved Cruce to second. Center fielder Kelcey Butts grounded out to third, setting the stage for Gaines. With two outs, Gaines showed some patience at the plate and worked the count to his favor. On a 2-0 pitch, Gaines launched the go-ahead homer to left, giving the Tigers a scant 7-6 lead. Neither team scored over the next inning and a half, and SGC came away with an important conference win over a very tough opponent.

Brice Baker (8-2, 4.90), the Tigers’ fourth pitcher of the day, lasted four innings and picked up the win. Baker’s eight wins are tops among the SGC pitching staff. Left fielder Kenny Sanderson had two hits and third baseman Jeremy Donaldson drove in two runs.

The Tigers are now 26-23 overall and 13-8 in conference play. SGC travels to Covington on April 26 to face Georgia Perimeter then returns home April 29-30 for a three-game set, again versus Georgia Perimeter. These three games will be the Tigers’ final home games of the year. After that, SGC has three games against Middle Georgia, all in Cochran.
