SGC to Observe Earth Day with Exciting Week of Activities

South Georgia College’s Environmental Awareness Club has three exciting events planned in observance of Earth Day, which takes place on Friday, April 22.

On Tuesday, April 19, two guests from the City of Douglas, Assistant City Manager Charlie Davis and Public Works Director Jacob Lott, will be on campus in Stubbs Hall, room 142, to answer questions about the city’s important recycling program. They will cover a variety of topics, including what, how and why to recycle.

Adam Safer and Dirk StevensonDirk Stevenson, Director of Inventory and Monitoring with Project Orianne Ltd., an indigo snake initiative in Telfair County, will give a presentation on snakes of Georgia in Stubbs 142 on Wednesday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. Stevenson has close to 20 years of field experience working in the field in the southeast coastal plain. A prolific writer and photographer, Stevenson has contributed articles and photographs to a number of journals and publications. His work experience includes stints with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, Nature Conservancy and the Department of Defense (Fort Stewart).

On Thursday, April 21, the Environmental Awareness Club will watch the film “Cool It” in Stubbs 142 at 5 p.m. The film explores different ways to thwart global warming. The EAC also encourages everyone to check out the city’s Earth Day ceremony and recycling expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking beside City Hall in downtown Douglas.

U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day as an environmental teach-in on April 22, 1970. In 1990, Earth Day went international and has since been a day where people across the globe pause to focus on issues facing the environment.
