SGC Sophomores Win 7-on-7 Tourney, Men Have Strong
Showing in Savannah
The SGC soccer teams were back in action this past weekend,
with the women concluding their spring schedule with a seven-on-seven
tournament that the sophomores, on a team called SGC Alumni, won. The men
traveled to Savannah to play in a four-team mini-tournament, which saw them
end the event with a 2-0-1 record.
In the women’s tournament, the Lady Tigers were split into two teams, SGC
Alumni (sophomores) and SGC (freshmen). The Alumni won the event defeating
South Georgia United in the finals 2-0. “It has been hard to get games this
spring so I was glad we could put something together for the women to
compete,” said head coach Ken Kirsch. “The sophomores won with patience,
maturity, possession, and in a sense, out-smarting the younger teams.”
Tiffany Koehmstedt and Lauran Navarro each had a goal in the championship
game to help them prevail. “This was my first women’s collegiate recruiting
class and I am going to miss all of these girls. I hope the younger girls
returning have learned from the older ladies and come back in the fall with
some high expectations,” noted Coach Kirsch. “I wish Rebecca Carlin,
Mackenzie Rexroth, Natalie Ochoa, Sherri Ann Nelson, Tiffany Koehmstedt,
Laura Navarro, and Jody Bethune all the best in their future endeavors.”
In extremely hot conditions on the coast, the men’s team played some very
attractive soccer. The Tigers went 2-0-1 on the day, pushing their spring
record to 7-1-1. “We finally played some very stiff competition and played
some very good soccer today,” said Coach Kirsch. The men started the day
playing the Melchester Wings, an amateur team from Atlanta. They tied 2-2.
Danny Zevallos and Joe Alexander each had a goal and John Clifford and
Felipe Nascimento each had an assist.
In the second game, the men played their rubber match against the Savannah
College of Art and Design, an NAIA school. The men defeated SCAD last spring
then lost to them earlier in the fall. In a great contest, the men pulled
out the win 1-0 on a goal from newcomer Ricky Garcia, assisted by Matheus
Silva. “What a great game to watch,” noted Coach Kirsch. “We defended well,
we possessed well, and we worked very hard throughout the contest.”
In the final game of the day, the men defeated The Booters, an amateur team
from Savannah, 3-2. Charles Jones scored and Matheus Silva had two goals to
lead the way. Sam Wise made several good saves in all the contests and ended
the day with a total of eight saves. “We played well today against high
level teams,” said team captain Emanuel Goncalves. “We played well as a team
today.” The men will finish their spring campaign on Sunday, April 17
against SGU at 4 p.m. on the SGC campus. “We set two goals this spring and
we have already accomplished one of them, but we need a clean sheet on
Sunday to meet our second goal,” said Coach Kirsch.
