SGC Men’s Soccer Picks Up Pair of Weekend Wins
The SGC men’s soccer team played another two game
mini-tournament on Sunday and came away with a pair of victories, pushing
the Tigers’ spring record to 5-1.
The Tigers played Georgia Southern University’s top club team and won 3-1 in
the first game. Matheus Silva continued his blistering scoring pace, netting
two goals in the contest while Kevin Palmer added the third goal. Felipe
Nasciemento assisted on all three goals. Assistant coach Larry Butler noted,
“The guys settled real nicely into a good rhythm and Matheus and Felipe just
have great chemistry working together.” Sam Wise had four saves and the lone
goal scored against SGC was an own goal by a miscommunication.
In the second game, SGC routed the Tallahassee United’s elite U-18 club 8-0.
Silva led the way with another two-goal performance. Ricky Garcia added two
goals of his own, Dennis Mullins had two goals, and the last two goals came
from Kamal Azimi and Charles Jones. Joe Alexander led the game with three
assists. “Tallahassee was fatigued from the game before and I was pleased
that our men didn’t overlook them and continued to play our own game,” noted
Coach Butler. The men have two more games remaining in the spring. They
travel to Savannah this Saturday to play the Savannah College of Art and
Design in a rematch of last year’s thrilling 2-1 win in Douglas. The Tigers
will finish their spring season on April 17 with a match against the South
Georgia United.
