Tigers Sweep Cavaliers, Now 7-5 in Conference Play
After fighting and clawing all season long to even their
record, the South Georgia Tigers finally reached the .500 mark after
sweeping Darton College in Douglas in a three-game weekend series. SGC used
strong pitching performances from Frank Ambrosino (win in game one) and Zack
Hula (save in game one, win in game three), as well as home runs by Logan
Gaines (3, 4) and Jeremy Donaldson (2) to keep the Cavaliers at bay. SGC won
by scores of 4-2, 19-4 and 8-3.
In the first game, Ambrosino (2-6, 3.74) surrendered just two runs (only one
of which was earned) in 8 1/3 innings of work before turning the game over
to Hula, who recorded the final two outs. The Tigers never really broke open
the game but their three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh put enough
distance between them and the Cavaliers to hold on for the win. Gaines hit
his third home run of the year in the contest – which was part of his
three-hit day.
In the second game of the series, Dylan Wall (4-2, 5.56), who lasted 3 2/3
innings, picked up the win by allowing only three runs on three hits. Gaines
homered again for his fourth (and team-leading) of the season. Gaines, David
Reid-Foley and Kelcey Butts all had three hits on the day.
The beat went on in the final game. The Tigers did what they had done all
weekend long – they scored runs in bunches, used the long ball a bit and
relied on lights-out pitching from both their starter and relievers. Hula
(4-0, 1.80) took the win with a solid five-inning performance. Jeremy
Donaldson hit his second home run of 2011, a three-run shot in the third
inning, while Butts had four hits on the day.
The Tigers are now 19-19 on the season and 7-5 in conference play. SGC hosts
ABAC on April 7 in a single game at 6 p.m. On April 9, the two teams meet
again in Douglas for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
