Scott, Kane to Discuss Historical Heritage of Douglas and SGC During Homecoming Weekend

As a part of South Georgia College’s 2011 Homecoming Weekend and 40th Anniversary of the SGC Foundation, the College is hosting what is sure to be a special presentation on Saturday, April 2 at 3 p.m. inside the William S. Smith Library on campus.

The program will feature two speakers, Ms. Mary Clyde Scott and Mr. Jackson Kane, discussing the historical heritage of Douglas. Ms. Scott is a member of the Gaskin Avenue Committee, which recently published a book titled “From Graveyard Road to Silk Stocking Row” outlining the history of Gaskin Avenue from 1895 to 1930. Ms. Scott will spend the first half of the session covering the historical importance of the Gaskin Avenue corridor and how the residents of that neighborhood helped shape the future of Douglas and Coffee County.

Mr. Kane, an associate with the architecture firm Lord, Aeck and Sargent, will follow with a presentation on the history of the buildings on the South Georgia College campus. Mr. Kane has served as project manager for the Tiger Village I and II residence hall projects and has obtained a deep knowledge of the architecture and history at South Georgia College. In June of last year, SGC was placed on the National Register of Historic Places at the state level of significance because of its association with the statewide development of a system of Agricultural and Mechanical (A&M) schools at the beginning of the 20th Century (SGC was originally named the Eleventh District A&M School). Kane will discuss the historical significance of SGC, from both an architectural standpoint and economic development standpoint.

This presentation is free and open to the public.
