Tigers Fall to Gordon College Highlanders

The last time the South Georgia College Tigers and the Gordon College Highlanders met, a trip to the finals of the state playoffs was at stake. Tuesday afternoon, the two teams met again for the first time since that series. The stakes were different but the outcome was the same – the Highlanders stymied the Tigers and walked away with a 6-1 win in the conference opener for both ball clubs.

The Tigers mustered just one run on five hits, while Gordon touched a quartet of SGC pitchers – Frank Ambrosino, Hunter Ross, Zack Hula and Kale Watson – for six runs on 13 hits. The Tigers’ only run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Catcher David Reid-Foley led off with a long double. He moved to third on a groundout by third baseman Jeremy Donaldson. First baseman Seth Foster, who is leading the team with a .370 batting average, singled up the middle, scoring Reid-Foley. That run broke a 0-0 tie and gave SGC a one-run lead. The advantage wouldn’t last long; the Highlanders scored a run in the top of the fifth then broke the game wide open with five runs in the seventh. Reid-Foley was 2-4 with a run scored. Ambrosino (0-5, 4.57) took the loss.

SGC and Gordon play each other again this weekend in Barnesville. The two begin the series Friday, March 18 with a single game, then play a double-header on Saturday afternoon. After playing Andrew College Tuesday in Cuthbert, the SGC and Andrew play a three-game set in Douglas on March 25 and 26. The Tigers are now 11-14 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
