Lady Tigers Open Conference Play With 1-1 Mark

The Lady Tigers of South Georgia College opened their conference schedule against Gordon College on Sunday by splitting a double header on the road. SGC lost game one 6-5 then won the second game 3-1. Friday afternoon, the Lady Tigers lost a double-header 6-3 and 15-5 to Georgia Military College.

In the conference opener, SGC had a 2-0 lead until late in the game but three crucial errors allowed Gordon to battle back. Holli Moore took the mound for the Lady Tigers and threw a complete game. All six of Gordon’s runs were unearned. “We had some great defensive plays, we threw people out on the base paths and at home. It was a solid defensive effort. But three mistakes cost us the game,” says head coach Rob Brunel. Lead-off batter Kadie New was 4-4 and Kacey Morris was 1-3 with two runs scored.

The Lady Tigers picked themselves up and got back down to business in game two. Annie Meeks (2) launched a two-run home run in the first inning to give SGC an early lead. The Lady Tigers added a run in the fourth on a Jensen Barrett double. Ashley Williams handled the pitching duties in the second game. She went all seven innings and gave up just four hits. Morris was 3-3 and Meeks was also 3-3 with a home run and a double.

Friday, the SGC pitching corps had trouble against Georgia Military. The Lady Tigers hit the ball well and played good defense. A strong wind caused some problems for the pitchers, who left some pitches out over the plate that the GMC offense didn’t waste. Despite losing both games, there were some bright spots. Courtlyn Fussell was 2-4 over the double-header. In the second game, both Meeks and Jaime Ray (2) homered.

“Early in the season, we were pitching well but weren’t hitting. Friday, we hit well but our pitching was off. Sunday, we hit well and pitched well. It looks like things are coming together for us at the right time. What has happened prior to conference matters, but not as much as this part of the season. We are still in good position to do very well in the conference,” says Coach Brunel.

Tuesday, SGC faced Waycross College in another conference showdown. Results were unavailable at press time. Saturday, the Lady Tigers play Georgia Perimeter at home. The first game begins at 2 p.m. SGC is 1-1 in conference play this season.
