Tiger Baseball Takes Two Out of Three Over Gloucester,
Glen Oaks
It’s been a busy week for the South Georgia College Tigers
baseball team and thus far – both literally and figuratively – they have
weathered the storm pretty well. In three games, SGC is 2-1, defeating
Gloucester County College with a few last-inning heroics on Monday and Glen
Oaks Michigan in a rain-shortened game on Wednesday. The following
afternoon, Glen Oaks exacted a little revenge and outslugged the Tigers
13-11 on a cool, windy day.
In Monday’s contest, Gloucester snatched a 4-0 lead over SGC with six runs
in the fifth and one in the seventh. The Tigers fought back with a pair of
runs in the bottom of the second to narrow Gloucester’s advantage to 7-6.
SGC then took advantage of two Gloucester miscues to win the game in the
bottom of the ninth. Zack Hula, who started in right field but pitched the
last 1 2/3 innings, led off with a walk. Then shortstop Logan Gaines
doubled, moving Hula to third. Gloucester’s Ronny Tanner bobbled the throw,
allowing Hula to score. Catcher David Reid-Foley grounded out, moving Gaines
to third. Then third baseman Jeremy Donaldson hit a walk-off single that
scored Gaines. Hula (2-0, 0.84) earned the win. First baseman Seth Foster
was 3-4 with four RBI and one run scored.
SGC head coach Scott Sims moved Wednesday’s game up in hopes of beating the
line of thunderstorms headed into the area. It almost worked. SGC and Glen
Oaks Michigan managed to get in about half of the first game of the
scheduled double-header. The Tigers won the game 5-1 in five and a half
innings. Donaldson hit his first home run of the season. Brice Baker (3-0,
3.22) was the pitcher of record for SGC.
Game two of what was supposed to be Wednesday’s double-header took place on
Thursday afternoon. This contest turned into a slugfest; the two teams
combined for 24 runs, 22 hits and they used a total of 12 pitchers (and, in
case you’re keeping score at home, SGC and Glen Oaks also combined for 11
errors). The Tigers carried a 9-8 lead into the eighth inning; Glen Oaks
plated five runs on three hits and two errors to pull ahead 13-9. SGC
attempted another last-inning comeback but the rally fizzled after scoring
two runs. Hunter Ross (1-1, 1.17), the Tigers’ fourth pitcher of the day,
got the loss. Gaines, Reid-Foley, Donaldson, Foster and center fielder
Kelcey Butts each had two hits for SGC.
The Tigers open a three-game set with Southwestern Illinois Saturday, March
12, with a 2 p.m. double-header. Sunday, the two teams play 1 p.m. On
Tuesday, Gordon College comes to town for the first conference game of the
season. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. The Tigers are 9-12 on the
season.
