SGC Celebrates Endowment of Buck Morris Scholarship
On Thursday, Feb. 10, South Georgia College accepted a third
scholarship endowment from one of its most generous donors. Last year, the
Maudine Wright family made the first of two donations in honor of Felton
“Buck” Morris, a long-time local educator and SGC alum. Thursday, Feb. 10,
the Wright and Morris families gathered at SGC as the Wrights completed the
endowment. The Wright family wanted to honor Mr. Morris as a tribute to him
for his long-time commitment to education.
Maudine and her family have been very good friends to South Georgia College,
endowing two previous scholarships with the SGC Foundation. The Rudolph
Malphus Scholarship is aimed at average, hard-working students pursuing a
degree in engineering or construction, while the Maudine Wright
Non-traditional Scholarship is earmarked for students who are pursuing an
education later in life. The newly endowed Buck Morris Scholarship is
reserved for incoming freshmen who graduated from Atkinson County High,
Coffee High or Citizens Christian Academy who will pursue a degree in math
or science.
Mr. Morris grew up in Atkinson County and furthered his education at
then-Valdosta State College and Middle Tennessee State University. He
returned to Atkinson County to teach, moving to Citizens Christian Academy
in 1970, where he taught, coached and ultimately served as headmaster. Both
Mr. Morris and the Wright family have numerous ties to South Georgia
College.
“It is wonderful to have friends like Maudine Wright and her family. Over 80
percent of our students receive some kind of assistance in order to attend
South Georgia College. Without the generosity of people like the Wright
family, many of our students would not able to further their education.
Thank you for your many contributions to our institution. We are also
honored to have alumni like Mr. Morris who have been so committed to
education and made such a difference in the lives of young people in our
area,” says Dr. Virginia Carson, SGC President.

Members of the SGC Foundation and staff stand with the
Wright and Morris families at the celebration to endow a scholarship in
honor of Buck Morris. Mr. Morris is pictured on the back row in the blue
sweater.
