Tigers Sweep FSCJ in Jacksonville
After dropping four of their first five games, the South
Georgia Tigers seem to be on the right track and moved within one game of
.500 after picking up a pair of wins over Florida Community College –
Jacksonville in Jacksonville Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers won game one
5-3 then took game two 1-0. A trio of SGC pitchers combined for the
three-hit shutout in the nightcap.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead thanks to a three-run, four-hit first
inning. Second baseman and lead-off hitter Wesley Morris started things off
with a single then moved to second on a wild pitch. Shortstop Logan Gaines
walked. Designated hitter David-Reid Foley, who has been the Tigers’ most
reliable bat this season, singled to load the bases. Third baseman Jeremy
Donaldson grounded out to second, scoring Morris in the process. Gaines and
Reid-Foley both moved up a base. First baseman Seth Foster scored Gaines on
an infield hit, moving Reid-Foley to third. He would score on a single by
catcher Braddock Rowe. The Tigers added insurance runs in the fifth and
sixth to make their lead a little more comfortable.
Late in the game, FSCJ’s bats showed a little life. The Stars scored in the
fourth, fifth and seventh innings, but never threatened the Tigers’ lead.
Starter Dylan Wall (1-1, 6.35) took the win for SGC. He gave up two runs in
4 2/3 innings. Frank Ambrosino (0-2, 3.86) made his first relief appearance
this year, throwing 1 2/3 innings. Mikey Rodriguez (0-0, 0.00) picked up his
second save of the season. Reid-Foley had three hits for the Tigers.
Game two went a little more quietly than the first game of the series. SGC
plated the game’s only run in the top of the fourth when Gaines scored on a
Donaldson single. Brice Baker (1-0, 1.74) started for the Tigers and
surrendered a pair of hits to the Stars. Tyler Ross (0-0, 0.00) and Zack
Hula (0-0, 0.00) both worked an inning in relief. Hula earned his first save
of the year. Gaines, Reid-Foley and Donaldson provided the offense for the
Tigers.
SGC is off until Tuesday, Feb. 15, when the Stars come to Douglas for a
single game at 4 p.m. The Tigers are now 3-4 on the season.
