Tigers Drop Double-Header to Vikings
South Georgia College Tigers pitchers David O’Neal (1-1, 3.38) and Frank
Ambrosino (0-2, 3.60) both turned in solid starting performances in Sunday’s
double header against St. Johns River Community College in Palatka but ended
up taking losses after the SGC offense couldn’t overcome early Viking leads.
In game one, O’Neal gave up three runs (all earned) in four innings – good
enough to put the Tigers in a position to win the game with a little
offense. But the SGC bats, which have been largely silent most of the young
season, once again refused to come out and play. There were a few bright
spots – center fielder Kelcey Butts and Logan Gaines had three hits each.
One of Gaines’s hits was a solo home run, the first SGC homer of the year.
The Tigers lost 6-3.
SGC did a better job of putting the ball in play in the second game. The
Tigers notched eight hits but still had trouble pushing runs across the
plate. Ambrosino had a very good outing, giving up just three runs (two
earned) on six hits in a complete-game performance. The Tigers had their
chances to win. In the top of the third, Butts led off with a single but got
picked off and was caught stealing. Second baseman Wesley Morris followed
with a double. He scored on a single by Gaines. Gaines moved to second on a
stolen base after designated hitter David Reid-Foley popped up for the
second out of the inning. With Gaines standing on second, third baseman
Jeremy Donaldson ended the inning with a strikeout, something that has
plagued the Tigers all season long. In the top of the sixth, Donaldson
doubled with one and then scored on a single by first baseman Seth Foster.
After catcher Braddock Rowe struck out, Foster was caught stealing to end
the inning. SGC came up short, losing game two 3-2. Morris and Foster
combined for four of the Tigers’ eight hits.
SGC is on the road for three games against Florida State
College-Jacksonville before returning home on Feb. 15 for a single game,
again against FSCJ. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. The Tigers are
currently 1-4.
