SGC to Host First-ever Swim Meet on Jan. 15
For the first time in the history of South Georgia College, the school is
hosting a collegiate swim meet on campus.
Since 2008, SGC has been engaged in an aggressive campaign to add sports to
its then-stable that included baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s
soccer. Men’s and women’s cross country were added in 2008, followed by
men’s and women’s swimming, and men’s golf in 2010. In its first year of
National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) competition, the Tigers
swim team has placed very well, with several swimmers having already
qualified for the national swim meet in Buffalo, New York, in early March.
During this first year, SGC has had to travel to compete against other
schools. That comes to an end on Saturday, Jan. 15, when the Tigers will
host LaGrange College and Florida A&M University for the first-ever South
Georgia College Invitational swim meet. The meet will take place at the SGC
pool located inside the Wellness Center on the east side of campus. The meet
begins at 11 a.m.
“We are very pleased to host this invitational meet on Saturday. We’ve had
meets here at the SGC pool in the past but never one for college teams. I’m
excited about being able to show off our campus and our facilities to the
visiting teams. I’m also anxious to see how our swimmers will compete this
weekend. They have worked very hard this year and made incredible progress
in just a short period of time,” says head swim coach C.M. Jenkins.
