Three Tigers Make All South Region Team
After finishing a very solid 2010 season with an 8-7-2 record and advancing
to the semi-finals of the state play-offs, post-season accolades continue to
roll in for the SGC men’s soccer team. Three players – a pair of sophomores
and one freshman – have been named to the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America All South Region teams.
Sophomore Felipe Nascimento, a forward who came to SGC from Coconut Creek,
Fla., made the NSCAA First Team All South Region after making the second
team last year. Nascimento finished the season with 12 goals, seven assists
and 31 points in 16 games.
Two teammates, Emanuel Goncalves, a freshman from Natal, Brazil, and Johnny
Waters, a sophomore from St. Simons Island, were named to the NSCAA All
South Region Second Team. Waters notched three goals, three assists and nine
points in 15 games as a midfielder. Goncalves, a defenseman, played in 15
games for the Tigers and was a big reason why the Tigers held their
opponents to less than two goals per game.
“I am very proud of these three players. It has been a joy to coach Felipe
and Johnny these last two years and watch them mature not only as soccer
players but also as young men. Emanuel is going to be an important part of
next year’s team. I believe his best soccer is ahead of him,” says SGC head
coach Ken Kirsch.
