Aqua Tigers Have Good Showing at Savannah Meet
The South Georgia College swim team travelled to Savannah last weekend for a
three-day meet against several university teams from the southeastern region
of the country. The men’s team competed well again by finishing fifth out of
eight teams while the women’s team finished seventh.
Leading the Tigers were distance swimmer and breaststroker Paul Poorman.
Poorman had a sixth place finish in the 200 breast and also earned an eighth
place finish in the 1650 free in his first effort at the one-mile distance.
Also placing in the finals for the men was Travis Jenkins in the 100 breast.
Kaitlyn Ward placed fifth for the women’s team in the 50 freestyle with a
very fast time of 25.42 seconds.
Also earning points for the Tigers in the consolation finals were Poorman in
the 500 and 200 freestyle events, Jenkins in the 100 and 50 sprint free and
Ward in the 100 breast and 100 free. Joshua Harrell placed in the top 16 in
all four of his events while T.J. Crossland and Ryan Norris placed in three
out of four events. Stephanie Crews placed in the 200 butterfly and Colby
Herrin earned points in the 200 Breast and 200 back.
The men’s relay teams of Jenkins, Poorman, Harrell and Crossland placed in
the finals in the 200 medley, 400 medley and 400 freestyle relay events.
"This was the fastest meet and we have been to all year. Although we did not
place in the top three as we have been doing, all of swimmers cut times. It
was also a good dry run for Nationals in that the meet was a prelims-finals
format. We have qualified all of our swimmers in at least three events for
the national meet in Buffalo and will start working toward that end when we
return next semester,” says C.M. Jenkins, head SGC swim coach.
The Tiger swimmers will break for Christmas and return to action in the
first home meet of the year on January 15.
