R.L. Lanier Family Makes Donation to SGC Foundation
At the November meeting of the South Georgia College Foundation, the
Foundation presented the Bruce Edwards Scholarship to Sunshine Carter, a
freshman swimmer and cross country runner from Baxley, and received an
additional donation from the R.L. Lanier family to enhance the R.L. Lanier
Scholarship fund.
One
of the Foundation’s most generous donors has been Satilla REMC. At the
meeting, Romeo Reyes, CEO of Satilla REMC and an SGC alum, presented the
Foundation with the donation from R.L. Lanier family. Mr. Lanier was a
long-time CEO of Satilla REMC and a strong supporter of education. During
his remarks, Reyes stated that it was Mr. Lanier who encouraged him to
return to school. Reyes, a line worker at the time, eventually obtained a
degree in engineering and is now CEO of Satilla. Like Mr. Lanier before him,
Reyes, who graduated from SGC, is a strong advocate for education. “Satilla
REMC has always been a great friend of this college. It means a great deal
to us that you decided to make this donation to our institution. An
investment in education is an investment in the future of our community and
our state,” says Dr. Virginia Carson, SGC President.
The Foundation also recognized Annilyn Phillips, a student from Hazlehurst
who is one of the current recipients of a Satilla REMC scholarship. She
graduated from Jeff Davis High in May and plans to pursue a career in the
medical profession with the intentions of becoming a doctor. After she
graduates from SGC, she plans to continue her education at the University of
Georgia.
The Foundation presented Sunshine Carter, a two-sport athlete at SGC, with
the Bruce Edwards Scholarship for the spring 2011 semester. Carter, a member
of the both the cross country team and the swim team, has been instrumental
to the success of both programs.
Sam Caldwell, a freshman cross country runner from Bremen, spoke at the
meeting and thanked the Foundation for the scholarship he received this
year. Caldwell holds the SGC record at the men’s eight-kilometer distance
(27:57) and made First Team All Conference this year, the first Tiger runner
to earn that honor.
