SGC Swimmers Finish Second, Third in LaGrange

The South Georgia Tigers swim team travelled to LaGrange this Saturday for a six-team invitational meet. The men took second place again with the women finishing third. Darton’s men and women won both sides of the competition. Berry College’s women finished second. Lagrange College, Brenau and Gordon College rounded out the top six.

Leading the Tigers were Warner Robins swimmer Paul Poorman and Douglas native Joshua Harrell. Former Demon swimmer Poorman won the 1,000 yard freestyle and the 200 yard breaststroke. Harrell placed first in the 50 freestyle and the 100 fly events. Also taking top honors on the day were Travis Jenkins in the 100 breast and Kaitlyn Ward in the 50 freestyle. The men’s relays teams made up of Jenkins, Harrell, Poorman and T.J. Crossland also earned several points for the Tigers by finishing a close second in all three relay events.

“Although we finished in the same order as last weekend our kids competed much better today,” commented head swim coach C.M. Jenkins. “We won six individual events on Saturday and the men’s relay team raced very well all meet. Our swimmers are training really well and it is showing up in our results.”

Other podium finishers were Poorman in the 500 free, Harrell in the 200 back and 100 back, Jenkins in the 200 IM, 100 free and 200 breast; Ward in the 100 free and 100 breast; Crossland in the 50 free, 100 free and 500 free; Stephanie Crews in the 200 fly and 100 fly; and Ryan Norris in the 200 fly.

The team will take Thanksgiving weekend off and return to competition in a big three-day meet in Savannah on Dec. 2-4.
