Two SGC Tigers Sign with Mercer University
Two South Georgia College Tigers are set to continue their baseball careers
at Mercer University. Catcher David Reid-Foley, a sophomore from the Paxon
School for Advanced Studies in Jacksonville, Fla., and Logan Gaines, a
sophomore from Augusta’s Westside High School, will be headed to Macon after
they graduate from SGC.
Tuesday,
Nov. 16, Reid-Foley and Gaines signed with Mercer at SGC. Both are excellent
students and superb baseball players. Reid-Foley and Gaines were a big
reason SGC won 40 games in 2010 and both will figure prominently in the 2011
campaign. Reid-Foley, a lefty, played in 49 of SGC’s 61 games, and hit .341
with one home run and 31 RBI. He also slugged .429, had eight doubles and
struck out just 10 times in 126 at-bats. Gaines was one of the Tigers’ most
prolific power hitters, posting a .361 batting average (third on the team)
with eight home runs and 55 RBI. He played in 58 of SGC’s games, and slugged
a team best .607 with 19 doubles and one triple.
While both players are excited to sign with Mercer, both know that their
work at SGC is far from over. Reid-Foley will continue as the Tigers’
catcher in 2011. “David really controls a game well behind the plate and he
handles the bat well from the left side. Left-handed catchers are a hot
commodity. He’s worked hard to get stronger this off-season and he’s had a
great fall,” says Scott Sims, SGC head baseball coach. Gaines, an outfielder
last season, is moving to shortstop this spring. “He played well at short in
the fall. He’s a great athlete who can play a lot of positions. He’s an
outstanding hitter with plus-power,” says Coach Sims. He expects both
Reid-Foley and Gaines to make an immediate impact at Mercer.
“Playing at South Georgia College for Coach Sims has been a great experience
for me. I’m thankful he gave me the opportunity to play and opened the door
for me to move on to Mercer,” says Reid-Foley.
“I really felt like the South Georgia program was going to be a good fit for
me. We had a great season last year and we want to have another big season
this spring. It’s nice to go ahead and sign with a four-year school and get
that out of the way. Now we can focus on this season without any
distractions. I’m very appreciative of this opportunity and I’m thankful for
the chance Coach Sims gave me to play,” says Gaines.
