Men Advance to 2nd Round, Women Fall to ABAC
The South Georgia College men’s soccer team missed the play-offs last year.
The Tigers made it back in 2010 and made up their mind to keep playing as
long as possible.
SGC defeated a very strong Wallace State College Lions team from Hanceville,
Ala., by a slim 1-0 margin in Douglas. The game was tough, intense and
physical. The Tigers showed they could handle anything the Lions threw their
way and, as a result, came away with a big win to get back in the conference
Final Four. “The men played the way we can and we should have put more goals
on the board,” said head coach Ken Kirsch. “We are peaking at the right time
and I like our chances against Middle Georgia.”
Joe Alexander scored the lone goal on a rocket just outside the 18-yard box.
Jon Michael White, Johnny Waters, and Ben Brinkley were spectacular in the
middle of the pitch and were a huge reason for the win. “They won every air
ball, every tackle, and were very instrumental in our attack,” said Coach
Kirsch. Sam Wise made six saves in the contest to register his fifth shutout
on the year. The men travel to Darton College to play the top seed Middle
Georgia Warriors Saturday at 8:30 p.m. If the Tigers win, they would advance
to the conference final on Sunday at 3p.m.
The women’s team also made the play-offs but their season ended Tuesday with
a 1-2 loss at ABAC in the first round. The women finish with a record of 7 –
10. The wind was a huge factor in the game and the Lady Tigers just could
not find the second goal needed to push the game into overtime. “I am
extremely proud of the ladies and I feel we deserved a better result,” noted
CoachKirsch. “Both of their goals were debatable but we need to finish our
chances. If we did, we would have walked away with a win.”
Kadie Naumann scored her ninth goal of the year, set up by Jody Bethune. The
Lady Tigers improved from last year in which they only won four games. This
freshman class is excited to come back for next year. “I have enjoyed
playing this season and learned a ton about the collegiate game. I feel we
left some wins on the field this year but we have a good nucleus returning.
I feel that next season, we will be a team to be reckoned with,” said
defender Chelsey Waters. Look for the Lady Tigers to have a strong spring
campaign as they prepare for the 2011 season.
