SGC to Host Diversity in Science Panel Discussion
In keeping with South Georgia College’s mission to integrate diversity into
all aspects of campus and student life, the Division of Natural Sciences,
Physical Education and Mathematics is hosting a panel discussion addressing
diversity in science and mathematics. The event will take place on Monday,
Nov. 8, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Stubbs Hall, room 142. The public is
invited to attend this free event.
The discussion is designed to showcase the diversity of professionals in
science and mathematics-related fields. The distinguished panel includes Dr.
Laura Chaney, a large animal veterinarian; Mr. Charles Ward, mathematics
instructor at the SGC entry program at Valdosta State University; Dr.
Subhash Goel, a chemist at nearby Optima Chemical; Dr. Penny Jackson, a
local chiropractor; and Dr. Andrew Jackson, DMD. The panelists will discuss
how they ch ose their professions and any roadblocks they might have had to
overcome. The goal of the event is to open the eyes of all students to the
vast career possibilities that are available in these fields.
“South Georgia College is committed to fostering a diverse and all-inclusive
learning environment. Diversity is an important component in each of the
scientific disciplines. We want to encourage our students to freely exchange
and discuss their ideas. To do so, we must respect our differences and
understand the varied backgrounds and experiences each of us brings into
both the classroom and the laboratory. We are excited to host this panel
discussion and we urge everyone to attend,” says Dr. Charles Johnson,
Natural Sciences, Physical Education and Mathematics division chair.
