SGC Soccer Teams Earn Play-off Berths
The South Georgia College men’s and women’s soccer teams made the most of
Sophomore Day on Tuesday, defeating Andrew College on the pitch at SGC. Now,
both teams are getting ready for the first round of the state play-offs,
which begin next week.
The Lady Tigers won 8-0 in a game that featured seven different goal
scorers. Leading goal scorer Kadie Naumann, who also registered an assist,
now has nine goals on the year, tied for tenth in the conference. Sophomore
Laura Navarro scored two goals, the first two of her career, and Rebecca
Carlin and Mackenzie Rexroth also added their first goals of the season.
Arianna Lopez netted a goal and posted two assists while Jody Bethune and
Chelsea Waters completed the scoring. “It was great to have the sophomores
play well in their last conference game of their career,” noted head coach
Ken Kirsch. “We played well as a team and this group is will always remain
dear to me as they are my first collegiate recruiting class I’ve ever
coached.” The women have won seven games on the year, tying the program mark
for most wins in a season. They also registered their sixth conference win,
which sets a record for the program. The Lady Tigers now will play the first
playoff game in program history next Tuesday as they travel to ABAC.
The men won 5-2 and saw Matt Sutton earn his second hat trick on the year,
Felipe Nascimento registered his eleventh goal and sophomore Zach Yost
scored his first ever career goal in a Tiger uniform. Nuno Gourgel had three
assists and Jeff Dumond made three saves in the contest. “This group has
worked so hard the past two years and are playing at a level that will be
tough to beat in the playoffs,” said Coach Kirsch. “To see where we have
come from since this time last year is awesome and I still believe we may be
playing for a few more weeks.” The men ended their regular season campaign
with a record of 7-6-2 and will host Alabama Wallace State Wednesday in the
first round of the playoffs.
“It was a special day for me as a coach,” noted Coach Kirsch, “to see the
maturation of all these young people, not only as players but as human
beings and to be a part of their lives is a great feeling. I have no doubt
all of them will be very successful in their future endeavors.”
