SGC to Test Emergency Alarm System On First Wednesday
of Each Month
As a part of South Georgia College’s ongoing efforts to make
the campus community as safe as possible, the College plans to test its
state of the art campus alert system on the first Wednesday of each month
beginning in October.
During the test, the message that will be broadcasted will announce that the
alert is just a test and there is no emergency situation. During an actual
emergency, the alert would provide students, faculty and staff with
instructions as to what to do next. The alert can be heard as far as a mile
from campus. SGC’s emergency alert is one of several ways the College has of
notifying students in case of an emergency. In addition, the emergency
preparedness plan includes several other methods of communicating with
students, faculty, staff and campus visitors.
“This system has the potential to reduce the risk of injury should a
disaster of any kind affect South Georgia College. Its presence
automatically makes the campus and the community a safer place,” says Jim
Folds, Director of Facilities and Campus Environmental Health/Safety.
“At South Georgia College, we take the safety of our students and our
employees very seriously. This emergency alert system is but one component
of a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan we have in place. We are set
up to utilize every resource at our disposal in an emergency situation. Our
institution has implemented an excellent emergency preparedness plan, one
that has been recognized by the Department of Homeland Security. Testing our
system only further enhances the plan,” says Dr. Virginia Carson, SGC
President.
