A Big Invitation to The Big Read
People in the Douglas and Coffee County area are invited to
join in The Big Read during the month of October.
The William S. Smith Library at South Georgia College and several community
partners are encouraging people to read and discuss the stories and poems of
Edgar Allan Poe during the month of October. The Big Read is an initiative
of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of
Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest. The William S. Smith Library
received a grant to sponsor this literary-based program.
The Library wants as many people as possible to take part and is asking
reading groups and other community groups to get involved. A limited number
of free copies will be available at Big Read events. Copies of many of the
works of Edgar Allan Poe are also available for individuals to borrow from
the South Georgia College William S. Smith Library and the Satilla Regional
Library. “Edgar Allan Poe is considered to have perfected the horror story
and invented the detective story, so this author is a very good choice for
the The Big Read during the month of October. I hope local people join in
this major initiative to help us promote the joy of reading American
literature,” says Jacqueline Smith, William S. Smith Library Director.
The Big Read will hold a kick-off event on the front lawn of the William S.
Smith Library at South Georgia College on Thursday, Sept. 30 from 3 – 5 p.m.
There will be dramatic readings by local dignitaries, Poe-related
activities, a special appearance by “Poe,” a live radio remote and free book
and event listing giveaways. Local schools can also get involved by
incorporating the works of Edgar Allan Poe in their classrooms. Teacher’s
guides are available at www.neabigread.org or by contacting the William S.
Smith Library.
