Soccer Tigers Tie Twice on Road Trip
The SGC men’s soccer squad traveled to North Carolina this past weekend to
open up regular season play and came home with a pair of ties against two
good programs.
On Saturday the Tigers played Cape Fear in Wilmington. In an exciting
contest the men’s team scored in the last minute of play to take home a 1-1
tie. Freshman Patrick Olschlager provided the heroics with a one-time finish
in the 90th minute of play from a pass from Nuno Gourgel. “We brought him
here to do just that,” noted Coach Kirsch. “He works hard and he seems to
have a knack for the back of the goal.”
In the Tigers’ second game, they traveled to Raleigh to play host Wake Tech.
Turnovers proved to be the problem for the Tigers as they escaped with
another tie, this time with a 2-2 score. “We need to take better care of the
ball against teams that are quick and good with transition like Wake Tech,”
said Coach Kirsch. “We had an issue with this last season and it is
something we will clean up.” Pierre St. Amour opened up the scoring with a
laser shot that ricochet off an opponent and into the back of the net. Wake
Tech responded with a quick counterattack goal and then took the lead on a
re-start goal late in the first half. “The second goal was a bad goal, but
like on Saturday we showed some resiliency and came back.” After pressuring
Wake Tech from the start of the second half, Nuno Gourgel found the back of
the net from a beautiful set up cross from Patrick Olschlager to tie the
game. After repeated scoring attempts throughout the rest of the game, the
Tigers could not find the right connection to come home with a win. “Both
teams were very good squads,” noted Coach Kirsch. “The trip was good and we
are establishing the work rate needed to be successful. But we still have a
tendency to turn the ball over at bad areas and bad times of the game.”
The Tigers open up conference play this Friday when they travel to Gordon
College.
