SGC Women Poised for Strong 2010 Campaign

The pre-season came to a conclusion for the SGC Lady Tigers’ soccer team on Sunday as they traveled to Flagler College in St. Augustine for their last tune-up before regular season play begins. The Lady Tigers finish pre-season camp with much more confidence than the 2009 campaign. “I think we have added more athleticism, depth and better soccer players,” noted head coach Ken Kirsch, “and I feel we should be much improved from our 2009 season.”

The Lady Tigers added 10 new freshmen for 2010, led by central mid-fielder Arianna Lopez from Barcelona, Spain; defender Chelsea Waters from Lake City, Florida; forward Kasie Cheney from Bellview, Florida; and keeper Ashley Kramer from Lake Weir, Florida. “I am thrilled to have these ladies come in. Assistant coach Larry Butler did a great job of recruiting this past year and we think we will be a much more competitive team in 2010,” said Coach Kirsch. The Lady Tigers return eight players from last year’s squad and they should provide the experience to help the young players adapt to college soccer. Marcillee McBean from Kingston, Jamaica leads the defense and should make a run at All-Conference this season. Mackenzie Rexroth from Valdosta will continue to provide leadership and strong play in the midfield while forward Jody Bethune from Kingston, Jamaica should provide the goals for the Lady Tigers this season. “I am looking for strong leader ship from the sophomores and I want them to help the young players adjust to college life,” noted Coach Kirsch.

Coach Larry Butler comes from Leesburg, Florida, and will be a great addition to the Lady Tigers’ coaching staff. “It’s great to have a full time coach working with us this season. It will help tremendously,” said Coach Kirsch. The women’s team went 0-2 in pre-season games but played strong in both contests. The Lady Tigers travel to USC-Salkehatchie College to open the season on Tuesday, Aug. 31.
