SGC Sweeps ABAC, Advances to Final Four

In the first two postseason games of 2010, the Tigers hit six home runs behind the pitching of Justin Fordham and Frank Ambrosino to easily move past the ABAC Stallions in the first round of the GJCAA Region 17 state playoffs in Douglas. SGC took game one in a run-rule shortened contest by a score of 10-2 and followed with an 8-1 win in game two.

The Tigers wasted no time in the first game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. All three runs came on the long ball; catcher David Reid-Foley hit an opposite-field solo homer to put SGC’s first run on the board. Logan Gaines added a long blast of his own after Andrew Anderson singled. In the fourth inning, Gaines got to trot again – this time on a Wesley Morris homer after Gaines led off the inning with a single. Later in the frame, Stuart Drew drove in Andrew Anderson on a single to center field. One inning later, Josh Palmer hit a two-run shot that put the Tigers up 8-2. Zack Bennett would drive in Gaines on a sacrifice fly with two outs to increase SGC’s advantage to 9-2. The Tigers scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Gaines walked with the bases loaded to score Drew.

Starter Justin Fordham had a little trouble in the top of the seventh; two Stallions reached base following a one-out error, with one runner reaching third. Fordham didn’t let the miscue bother him, and he promptly retired the final two batters for a complete game win. Fordham gave up just two runs (both earned) on seven hits. Logan Gaines led the way for the Tigers offensively with a 3-3 day that included three runs scored and three RBI. Andrew Anderson had three hits and Stuart Drew added two hits of his own.

In game two, starter Frank Ambrosino kept the ABAC bats quiet all afternoon, going eight innings and surrendering just one unearned run. Closer David O’Neal threw the final inning to finish things off for the Tigers. The big inning came in the bottom of the fifth when SGC relied once again on the four-bagger to put the game out of reach. Andrew Anderson launched a two-run homer with Drew standing on first to put SGC ahead 4-1. Six batters later, Chris Thompson connected with a Ryne Powers offering for a three-run blast. A Stuart Drew RBI single in the bottom of the seventh plated the final run for the Tigers, who cruised to an 8-1 victory. Drew and Josh Palmer had three hits each.

SGC will face Gordon College, which stunned Young Harris by beating the might Mountain Lions in two run-rule shortened games over the weekend, on Saturday, May 8 in Douglas. The two teams will play a double-header beginning at 1 p.m. If necessary, SGC and Gordon will play a third game Sunday at 2 p.m.
